Robert Goulet Awaiting Lung Transplant

Robert Goulet, 73, has been hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and is awaiting a lung transplant. Goulet is suffering from a fatal lung disease called interstitial pulmonary fibrosis.

Goulet has been placed on a respirator and will not survive unless he receives a new pair of lungs. He was diagnosed with the disease on Sept. 30 after a rapidly progressing illness that began after he performed in Syracuse, N.Y. on Sept. 20.

Speaking by phone from the hospital, Vera Goulet said doctors inserted a breathing tube down her husband's throat and sedated him, and that they were last able to speak two weeks ago.

"He said, 'Just give me a new pair of lungs and I'll hit the high notes until I'm 100,'" she said.

"I told him I loved him. He told me he loves me. He was ready to have the tube inserted. And he said, 'Just watch my vocal cords.'" The couple's 25th wedding anniversary was Oct. 17.
