Patrick Swayze Has Pancreatic Cancer

Patrick Swayze, 55, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The National Enquirer broke the story and reported that Swayze only had weeks to live, but Dr. George Fisher, his physician, told US Magazine:

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."

Because pancreatic cancer is very difficult to treat once it has progressed, it's great to know that Swayze's doctor believes his disease is limited and that they are optimistic.

Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has announced that he has early-stage prostate cancer. The disease was caught early and should not affect his duties as Prime Minister, he says.

"I will be able to carry out my duties fully before the treatment and within hours afterward," Olmert said. "My doctors ... informed me that there is a full chance of recovery and there is nothing about the tumor that is life-threatening or liable to impair my performance or my ability to carry out the mission which has been bestowed upon me."

Olmert will have surgery in the next few months.

Bond's 'Moneypenny', Lois Maxwell, Dies

Lois Maxwell, who played the role of Miss Moneypenny in the first 14 Bond films, has died in Australia at the age of 80. Maxwell was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2001 and moved to Australia after undergoing treatment in order to live with her son's family.

Even though she only spoke a total of 200 words and had a total screen time of one hour throughout the series, her character remains one of the most memorable and beloved in cinema history.

Though she never was an official Bond girl, Maxwell's Moneypenny had the pleasure of trading witty flirtations with 007 whenever he stopped by his boss' office. She quickly became a series staple, generating some of the more memorable bits of humor through her double-entendre-laden exchanges with the suave secret agent.

A close friend of Roger Moore throughout the years, she commented in 2005 on the new bond, Daniel Craig, saying: ""Hmm. He's not as handsome as Roger or Sean, is he? He has what you'd call an interesting face ... Perhaps the make-up girls could do something to him - maybe give him a wig."

Luciano Pavarotti Dies of Pancreatic Cancer

Luciano Pavarotti, 71, has died at home in Modena, Italy after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mr. Pavarotti's operatic career lasted for more than four decades after his debut as Rodolfo in Puccini's "La Boheme" in Modena on April 29, 1961. His farewell appearance in opera was at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on March 13, 2004, his 383d performance in that venue.

Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of any other cancer. Out of 32,180 new diagnoses per year in the United States, there are 31,800 deaths. This is in large part because the disease shows very few early symptoms and it is usually only discovered once it has metastasized.

Other celebrities who have died of pancreatic cancer include Michael Landon, Rex Harrison, Syd Barrett, Count Basie, Mickey Spillane, Dizzy Gillespie, Donna Reed, and Marcello Mastroianni.

A new vaccine against pancreatic cancer is being developed and is currently being tested in human subjects with promising early results.

Good Morning America coanchor Robin Roberts, 46, has announced that she has early stage breast cancer. She wrote on the ABCNews.com website:

"It all started a few weeks ago. We had gotten the news that our dear colleague and friend Joel Siegel had passed away and we began preparing for our special tribute show for him. I did a piece about Joel's courageous battle with cancer, reporting on the way my friend had lived his life and been such a successful advocate for the importance of early cancer screenings.

"That very night when I went to bed, I did a self breast exam and found something that women everywhere fear: I found a lump."

Today, she spoke with Diane Sawyer and said, "I will get up like everybody else, I will go to work, I'll say 'Good Morning America,' I will have my good days and bad days, so be kind to me on the message board when I've had my bad days and the hair goes."

"But this was a distraction from the true nature of the man. His record as a pioneering space pilot shows the real stuff of which he was made."

Fred Thompson in Remission from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

Republican Fred Thompson, former Tennessee senator and Law & Order star, says he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2004 and that he is now in remission. In a Fox News interview, he told Neil Cavuto:

"I wouldn't be doing this if I wasn't satisfied in my own mind as to the nature of it and the fact that not only will I have an average lifespan but in the meantime I will not be affected in anyway by it. Now of course nobody knows the future but that has been in the history for almost three years now in terms of no symptoms and no sickness."

Thompson is considering a run for president in 2008. About that, he says:

"I'm just going to wait and see what happens. I wanted to see how my colleagues who are on the campaign trail do now, what they say, what they emphasize, what they're addressing, and how successful they are in doing that, and whether or not they can carry the ball in next November."
