Author Mickey Spillane Dead at 88
Crime novelist Mickey Spillane, 88, has died at his home in South Carolina after an undisclosed illness. Spillane's novels, 13 of which feature tough detective Mike Hammer, include I, the Jury, Kiss Me Deadly, The Deep, The Girl Hunters, and The Delta Factor. Though he was often critically panned, his novels were bestsellers and several of them were made into films.
Spillane, a Jehovah's Witness who taught Bible class, occasionally acted in movies and played Hammer in the 1963 film of "The Girl Hunters," as well as parodying his gritty image in television commercials for Miller Lite beer.Spillane had no pretensions about his writing, going about it with the philosophy that "If the public likes you, you're good."
