Redskins Star Sean Taylor Shot in Miami

Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor was shot by intruders in his home early today in Palmetto Bay, Florida. He is in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami after being shot in the groin.

[Taylor's lawyer Richard Sharpstein] said Taylor, 24, emerged from surgery about 12:30 p.m. but had lost a lot of blood and remained unconscious, his brain at risk of injury from the blood loss. He was in intensive care and doctors have allowed his family to see him. Sharpstein said a doctor informed the family around 6 p.m. Monday that Taylor had squeezed a nurse's hand, giving the family hope that he was responding to treatment.

The intruders fled the scene and did not steal anything. Taylor's girlfriend and child were also in the bedroom at the time of the shooting. The baby slept through the whole thing.

Someone broke into Taylor's home last week when nobody was home, rifled through several things, and left a kitchen knife on a bed in the house.

Terrell Owens Denies Suicide Attempt

There is uncertainty over what really happened to Terrell Owens last night. According to the Smoking Gun, which obtained a copy of the police report before it was officially released:

The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, 32, was depressed and told cops that he was trying to harm himself, the report states. A female companion of the athlete told officers that Owens last week filled a prescription for 40 pain pills, but had only taken five of the pills up to yesterday. Owens told police that he had taken the balance of the pills last night.

Owens was taking generic Vicodin (hydrocodone) to relieve the pain of his recently broken hand. He says the Vicodin mixed with supplements he is taking caused him to become ill.

He said Wednesday the confusion likely stemmed from an empty bottle of pain medication found by his publicist, who was with him at the time and called 911. He said the rest of the pills were in a drawer.

The police report has since been officially released with the parts about suicide blacked out. When asked why he answered "yes" when asked if he was trying to harm himself, Owens said, "I wasn't coherent as they probably thought I was. A number of people were asking me questions. I don't remember the police officers that were in there or the doctors that were in there."

4-time Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race champion Susan Butcher, 51, has died. Butcher was diagnosed with leukemia in December 2005. She was in remission when she had a bone marrow transplant on May 16, 2006. A week ago, a bone marrow biopsy revealed that the leukemia had returned.

During her chemo treatments, Butcher daydreamed about land in the White Mountains she and her husband bought last fall. They planned to build a bigger cabin on the land that comes with 300 miles of groomed trails - perfect for mushing dogs - right out the back door.

Did Body Heat Beat Lance Armstrong's Testicular Cancer?

Three Johns Hopkins University researchers are putting forth the theory that says body heat had something to do with Lance Armstrong - and thousands of other men each year - beating testicular cancer.

They note that the high cure rate for testicular cancer may be due to the fact that testicles are cooler than other parts of the body, so any cancer that develops there may not be able to handle the heat when it spreads to warmer areas of the body.

Understanding the basis for what they call “the Lance Armstrong effect” might lead to ways to help make other kinds of cancer more treatable, the researchers said in an article in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association.
